Like so many, Alternatives in Motion is heartbroken by the recent murder of George Floyd and the numerous victims that have suffered due to systematic racism, hatred, and violence. We stand with our community in condemning systemic racism, hatred, and violence toward black and brown communities.
While we acknowledge that our statement is delayed, we cannot stand idly by and allow our silence to be mistaken for complicity. As an organization that is committed to enhancing independence and mobility for persons with disabilities, pursuing equity and justice is at the heart of our work. In this way, our work – at its core – is deeply aligned with the movement to end systemic racism, hatred, and violence towards black and brown communities. We stand in solidarity with this movement and are committed to deepening and advancing our commitment and work towards diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.
For those looking for resources to engage and support the movement to end systemic racism, hatred, and violence towards black and brown communities, we recommend connecting with and/or supporting the organizations working directly on this issue in West Michigan, including (but not limited to): Grand Rapids Urban League, Baxter Community Center, Urban Core Collective, and GRAHHI.
